Miss Florida and Miss Georgia Win Preliminary Awards at 2014 Miss America Competition

 

Final  Night of Preliminary Winners Presented as the Contestants Gear Up For The Big Night on September 15

On the third and final night of the 2014 Miss America preliminary competitions back home in Atlantic City, Miss Florida, Myrrhanda Jones was named Thursday night’s preliminary Talent winner for her baton twirling performance to "Big Noise From Winnetka" in Boardwalk Hall. Myrrhanda will receive a $2,000  scholarship. Also capturing the spotlight was Miss Georgia, Carly Mathis, who was the preliminary Lifestyle and Fitness winner in a white Catalina swimsuit. Carly will receive a $1,000  scholarship.

As the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women and one of the nation’s leading achievement programs, the Miss America Organization last year made available more than $45 million in scholarship assistance. The Miss America Organization provides young women with a vehicle to further their personal and professional goals and instills a spirit of community service through a variety of nationwide community-based programs.

The 2014 Miss America Preliminary Competition Judges Panel Announced

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Judges Panel Will Score the Results for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Evening for the Competition’s Historic Return to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall

LINWOOD, NJ (August 8, 2013) -The Miss America Organization revealed today the panel of distinguished judges for the 2014 Miss America Preliminary Competition. The diverse group of seven judges features a Miss America; an acclaimed music critic at The Boston Globe; former Executive Vice President of Time, Inc., a celebrity hair stylist, the musical director and conductor of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The Lion King, the Vice President of the William Morris Endeavor Talent Agency, and a former Miss Louisiana.

The preliminary judges will gain the first insight into this year’s 53 contestants, joining together to evaluate them for three nights on Tuesday, September 10, Wednesday, September 11, and Thursday, September 12. Bringing expertise from their individual fields, the panel will assess each contestant’s performance in categories including Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit, Evening Wear, Talent, Interview, and an On-Stage question. A separate celebrity panel will judge the final competition on September 15, during a live broadcast on ABC from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The preliminary judges include:

Shirley Cothran Barret: This Miss America crowned in 1975 has motivated audiences with her transparent and humorous candor for more than 30 years. After receiving a doctorate degree in education, Barret became an author and professional speaker who serves on boards such as MADD, Texas Speedway Children’s Charity, and her local school board. Using her life experiences, she motivates, encourages and edifies her listeners to examine their present and future destinies.

Richard Dyer: This notable journalist spent 25 years as a critic with The Boston Globe and is a two-time winner of the Deems Taylor/ASCAP Award. He is currently writing a book celebrating the 50 years of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, of which he has been a member of the jury since 2001. Dyer is a former Briggs-Copeland lecturer at Harvard University and has also written for many music publications, including Opera News, High Fidelity, Musical American and The Nation.

Stephanie George: George is the former Executive Vice President of Time Inc. and the former President of In Style, Real Simple, Essence and The Parenting Group. She has served as President for Women’s Wear Daily Media Worldwide, as well as Executive Vice President of Fairchild Publications. George serves on the boards of MPA, Burberry and the Lincoln Center. In 2009, the USO named her “Woman of the Year.”

Oscar James: This Emmy Award-winning celebrity hair stylist maintains a loyal client list of supermodels and entertainers all over the world. He has styled celebrities such as Tyra Banks, Halle Berry, Former Miss America 1984 Vanessa Williams, and Beyoncé. His work can be seen on the pages of Vogue, Glamour, Essence, In Style and Cosmopolitan.

 

Karl Jurman: Jurman is the musical director and conductor of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The Lion King, currently celebrating its 15th year on Broadway. Jurman served as Music Supervisor International (London & Australian companies) of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, as well as Conductor on Broadway. Previous Broadway conducting assignments include Guys and Dolls, The Will Rodgers Follies and Into the Woods. Karl has played piano for over 20 Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals. He is married to former Miss New Jersey and 2nd runner-up to Miss America Mary D’Arcy.

Cori Wellins: Wellins is a WME partner and television literary agent. She represents a broad array of producers, writers, show runners, and talent in both the scripted and non-scripted space. Wellins’ clients include Rob Bowman (Castle), Christina Boylan (Once Upon a Time), Steve Holland (The Big Bang Theory), Liz Meriwether (New Girl), former National Lampoon writer Steve Hely (The Office), Matt Warburton (The Mindy Project), Alan Yang (Parks & Recreation), The View co-host Jenny McCarthy, and many others. Wellins began her entertainment career as an actress, appearing in films including Arachnophobia. In 1995, she joined the William Morris Agency and currently heads the agency’s television literary department.

Nita Whitaker: This former Miss Louisiana and Hall of Fame Star Search Grand Champion Winner is an accomplished singer in clubs and arenas, as well as television and movies.  She has been the guest performer at The Freedom Awards honoring Oprah Winfrey, President Bill Clinton and actress Ruby Dee, sang duets with Andrea Bocelli during a Winter Tour, and has performed with Josh Groban, Michael Buble and Chris Botti. She has also shared the stage with Barbra Streisand, Faith Hill, Celine Dion, Richard Marx, Stevie Wonder and Yolanda Adams. Whitaker has penned a book titled Finding My Voice: My Journey through Grief to Grace.

MISS OKLAHOMA AND MISS NEBRASKA WIN PRELIMINARY AWARDS AT 2011 MISS AMERICA PAGEANT

Las Vegas, Nevada – January 13, 2011 – Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan was named Thursday night’s preliminary Talent winner for her piano performance of  “White Water Chopped Sticks,” during the third night of competition of the 2011 Miss America Pageant presented by DSW at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Teresa will receive a $2,000 scholarship. Also in the spotlight was Miss Oklahoma Emoly West, who was the preliminary Lifestyle and Fitness winner in a black Swim ‘n Sport swimsuit. -Emoly will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Las Vegas, Nevada – January 12, 2011 – Miss Rhode Island Deborah Saint-Vil was named Wednesday night’s preliminary Talent winner for her vocal performance of “Smile,” during the second night of competition of the 2011 Miss America Pageant presented by DSW at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. MISS CALIFORNIA AND MISS NEW YORK

Las Vegas, NV – January 27, 2010 – Miss California Kristy Cavinder was named Wednesday night’s preliminary Talent winner for her Ballet en Pointe performance to the Slave Maiden Variation from “Le Corsaire,” during the second night of competition of the 2010 Miss America Pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Kristy will receive a $2,000 scholarship. Also in the spotlight was Miss New York Alyse Zwick, who was the preliminary Lifestyle and Fitness winner in a black Winnwear swimsuit. Alyse will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

The Miss America Organization is proud to announce our three preliminary night hosts leading up to the 2010 Miss America Pageant! Our special hosts for the evenings are multi-talented and will light up the stage with their charismatic personalities.

TUESDAY NIGHT

Brad Brown

Brad, a volunteer in the Miss America Organization for over 10 years,  has served as Master of Ceremonies at the Miss Indiana Scholarship Program state competition in Zionsville, Indiana for the past 5 years.  Brad has also hosted several local pageants around the Hoosier State. On the weekends, you can tune into sports and see Brad as the anchor and reporter at WRTV-6 in Indianapolis. As a sports reporter, he covers the Indianapolis Colts, the Indiana Pacers, the Indy 500, Brickyard 400, along with college and high school sports. Brad is a native of Butler, Indiana, and currently resides in Indianapolis.

Reggie Rivers

Reggie is a former NFL running back who played six seasons with the Denver Broncos (1991-1996).  Reggie is on Denver’s Channel 4 (CBS) Weekend Sports Anchor and he also co-hosts Countdown to Kickoff show.  He is a featured guest commentator on “Court TV,” and a columnist for Pro Football Weekly. As the host of a weekly television show, “Global Agenda” on KBDI, Channel 12 in Denver and “Common Good,” on Denver’s Comcast 5, Reggie is the ultimate news anchor.  He is an inspirational speaker which has made him in high demand for speaking engagements for corporations, organizations, schools and other groups.  In 1994, he wrote the as-told-to autobiography of former Denver Broncos wide receiver Vance Johnson, The Vance: The Beginning and The End. In addition, Reggie has written and published three novels:  Power Shift, 4th and Fixed and My Wife’s Boyfriend & Our Feud With The Highlands Ranch Homeowners Association, all involving professional football storylines.

Dena is back again to help host the final night of competition at the Miss America 2010 Pageant!  She first garnered attention in 1995 as Miss New Jersey in the Miss America Pageant, where she proudly ranked in the “Top 50″. Since then she has worked as a television host, comedienne and is the mother of three. Dena has been doing stand-up all over the country and has been seen warming-up audiences for Paula Deen and Emeril Lagasse on the Food Network, as well as, hosted Real Simple TV on PBS. Last year, Dena performed stand-up at the United Nations and also launched her own one-woman show “One Funny Mother: I’m Not Crazy” to rave reviews.  On the lighter side, Dena’s greatest joy is stand-up comedy. This is the second year that Dena will be hosting at the Miss America Pageant!
