As I drove over to the event tonight, I thought about what a difficult job the judges would have today. There were many ladies that were worthy of Top Ten, but only TEN will make it.
Matt Davenport, himself, came out today to kick off the pageant. The crowd was definitely a rumble with anticipation and excitement. Matt got the crowd excited and ready for the event.
Ryan Greenawalt once again ignited the audience with his song while the ladies of International swarmed the stage. Introductions of all the contestants followed as well as bringing our MC’s back: Kyle Henry and Laine Berry.
The contestants returned to the stage. The first award of the evening was the online voting award for Mrs. Michigan.
It was time now for the Top Ten announcement. As always, these are reported in the order announced which was random.

After the naming of the Top Ten, it was time to pad the script to give the ladies time to change into their suits for On Stage Question.
Ryan Greenawalt sang “At This Moment” which they say Michael Buble has made famous, but I guess I’m showing my age because I’ve always attributed this tune to the great Billy Vera and the Beaters. He sang the heck out of it. I love it when they give Ryan a nice soulful tune to belt out.
The Onstage Interview competition followed. Each contestant was told to discuss their platform in the first question. Then, they responded to a single follow up question. As always, some of the contestants truly answered the questions while others performed prepared speeches. I’m not snarky enough to say who is who, but I suspect this helped the judges make their deliberations.
By the way, when people ask me how I feel, I don’t lead with “Blessed.” I must of heard that seven times during this competition. The correct answer: “I feel with my fingers. That’s what they are there for. What do you use? Your tongue?”
Don’t expect to win any pageants with that answer though. Just sayin’.
They called an intermission which I think we all appreciated more than a 20 minute treatise on “go Red for Women.” Again. Just sayin’.
Ryan Greenawalt warmed the audience back up with a tune when we got back in our seats. Fitness Wear followed. Which was followed with another tune, this time by MC Kyle Henry. He did a wonderful job with a Mroz hit.
Okay. Laine Berry just fell off her stool. She appears unharmed, but we will send out updates. I guess she really FELL for her cohost.
I couldn’t help it.
Armaiti Shahidi-Fitzgerald came out on stage next for her final walk as Mrs. International 2009. For those that don’t know, Armaiti is expecting a child soon and it was noticeable. We wish her a wonderful and healthy pregnancy and a smooth delivery.
We followed this with the evening gown competition. After that, they went to a tune where Ryan and Kyle sang together. Then, they went to introducing about 1% of the audience.
Ryan sang. Kyle sang. Laine was nervous about falling over, we think, because she didn’t go back on the stool. We wish Laine a fast recovery. She’s been standing on heels all day, so this is the only reasonable explanation.
Laine. We aren’t done teasing you yet.
Kyle then brought out the contestants from this year’s contest one last time. Special Awards came first.
4th Runner Up is Mrs. Southeast Asia.
3rd Runner Up is Mrs. Utah.
2nd Runner Up is Mrs. Florida.
1st Runner Up is Mrs. Oklahoma.
Our new Mrs. International 2010 is Mrs. Southeast International, Shannon Devine.
It was a wonderful evening and we look forward to next week’s Teen and Miss competitions.

Mrs. International Pageant Preliminary Night 2010

One of my favorite times of year is once again upon us. The Mrs. International pageant has returned to fabulous Chicago, IL for preliminary competition. I have my sparkle-o-meter, a makeshift Amazing-A-Tron, and my incredible gift for stating the obvious and we are preparing for the pageant.
As usual, I write these notes during the pageant and post them shortly after the pageant. I will attempt, as always, to post a wrapup LIVE from the Doubletree hotel next door after the event. Also, our plan is to have a program this coming Tuesday AND FRIDAY. Tuesday’s show, of course, is very special as it will be the 250th episode of the PageantCast. Friday’s show should carry over any information or interviews not covered in the show on Tuesday. I will try to balance the shows as always so you won’t want to miss either program. We plan to not have Amazing-A-Tron segments during the LIVE! Pageant Review Tuesday and Friday.
Matt Davenport Productions once again put together the stage production and this year they sported a brand new set complete with two Jumbo-Tron screens and a fresh opening number done to Black Eyed Peas’ super hit “Tonights Going to be a Good Night” sung by Ryan Greenawalt (http://www.ryangreenawalt.com/). The ladies came in beautiful fuchsia outfits that seemed to have the effect of setting the audience completely on fire.
The ladies introduced themselves from ports of call all over the country and across the seas including Austrailia and India. All the ladies looked stunning and ready for an exciting competition!
After introductions and that knockout of an opening number, they introduced our MC’s for the evening Kyle Henry and Mrs. International 2008 Laine Berry. Laine, as expected, was decked out in RED from top to bottom; if you recall, Go Red for Women was her platform and the official platform of the International Pageant system (http://www.mrsinternational.com/).
Mrs. International 2009 Armaiti Shahidi-Fitzgerald was welcomed to the stage to say some brief words while the ladies backstage prepared for the next phase of competition. The MC’s introduced the judges, which I couldn’t catch everyone’s name, so I won’t list here. You can get that from the program books anyway. Go buy one. Sheesh.
Fitness Wear was the first phase of competition on stage. (The ladies had already done their interview the previous day with round-robin style 5 minute interviews.) Well, these ladies had obviously worked hard to get in the physical shape they were for this competition on stage. Most of the ladies came out in two-piece fitness wear outfits. The competition went quickly and professionally as we’ve come to expect at the International pageants. One snafu with announcing the wrong contestant was the only exception to that rule and it appears to me that the contestants must have gotten out of order backstage somewhere.
During breaks Kyle and Laine had some banter to work through and I have one thing to say: I think Laine Berry may speak faster than that guy that did the Federal Express commercials back in the 1980′s. I have never heard someone that could go through an entire page of script in approximately 20 seconds before. I’m just a Midwestern boy and we’re not used to such fast speaking.
The new set was deceptively simple in concept but by changing the lighting from time to time, it really could take on any character. For pageant directors that give lighting little to no attention, remember you can save a lot of money on a set by creating a simple set and just working with the lighting to give it best affect.
Once we completed Fitness Wear (which takes a while with this many contestants), I felt I didn’t have a good feel for who should be finalists yet. Despite my pleading that they go through the whole shebang again from beginning to end, the show must go on. (I guess I’ll need to get the DVD. Really now. Just one more time.
Okay.
Moving on.
From Fitness Wear, we moved into Intermission or as I like to call it “Husband Wrangling Competition.” Eddie Peterson was equal to the task.
So during intermission, had a couple wonderful conversations. The concensus was that we have a highly talented and exciting group of women competing this year and that the production is simply glorious. The second act started with a wonderful tune sung by Ryan Greenawalt and a quick move into the Evening Gown competition.
The ladies, as always, were escorted by their husbands which always, for me, adds to the drama of the event. I typically check out the ladies gown and enjoy watching the husband as they nearly pass out from fear of somehow screwing it up for their wives. Yet another reason I am a bachelor. I would fall into the first row or something. These guys were all so smooth…I thought at least a few of them looked a little like James Bond.
And the Bond girls were up to the glamour of the evening. The sparkle-o-meter was flashing like a 60′s hippy on a progressive campus. We saw an unusual amount of black gowns this year, with the BLING moving to the jewelry and accessories. There were some of the glitzy jewelfests (the Jessica Rabbit look if you will) we’ve become accustomed to at the Mrs. International competition, but less than previous years. White is still very popular in competition, but I did see a few striking strong color gowns, particularly some gorgeous red gowns this year.
So I’ve heard the new arch in the set called the “Stargate” but as I watch this competition, I call it the compass as we lead ourselves on a magical journey around the world. Can we agree on calling it the International compass???
I just realized this article is more random than some in the past. I do not apologize. Continuing with the random, this year I saw a lot less uniformed gentlemen escorting their wives. I know at least in one case that is due to the husband having been recently deployed. To them, I thank them all for their service to our country.
By the way, all the production music was new that I heard this year. The production music last year had been used a few years, so I was happy to hear the change. After 50 contestants, any piece of looping music becomes trying.
After 2 phases of competition with 3 groups of contestants, the preliminary competitions were now complete. They welcomed Ryan Greenawalt to sing “Better Days” to the stage. By the way, all this was accomplished by 2 hours into the pageant. Plenty of smaller pageants can’t churn with that much content in that kind of time frame. Congratulations to the International Pageant team.
Midway through the song Ryan reintroduced the ladies and they took the stage. This led us into the preliminary awards ceremony. That means, of course, the naming of the Photogenic Winner. It is decided by the judges based on the candid photos taken during the week. Mrs. Southeast International, Shannon Devine, won the award in her stunning white gown.

Mrs. International 2009 Preliminary Night

Tonight in Chicago, IL, one lovely lady came one step closer to one of the most prestigous crowns in pageantry: Mrs. International 2009. You could tell the atmosphere was electric as people came into the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts and found their seats. Everyone was a-buzz about who their favorite and least favorite was…and all this before anyone even hit the stage!The ladies had rehearsed for nearly eight hours today alone…so you know just starting all their feet were already in pain before the event even began. They started the show with a fabulous opening number which was a high energy version of “Strut” by the Cheetah Girls performed live by Ryan Greenawalt.
After introductions, they brought Laine Barry took the stage in one of her final appearances as Mrs. International 2008. She discussed many of her other appearances during the year, particularly her activities with Go Red! for Women. The judges were also introduced before the pageant moved on.
Fitness wear was first, and I believe this is the first year they allowed two piece along with one piece fitness wear…(I need that verified. I think Teen and Miss allowed it last year, but not sure about Mrs. Someone leave me a comment if I am right or wrong!) You could really tell all these ladies left nothing to chance and worked out to be in tip-top shape for this very important competition. In fact, this is so much fun to watch, I don’t think I’ve looked down at the laptop once during the competition…so I apologize if my touch typing isn’t quite up to snuff!I should mention at this point the incredible production. The set was elaborate and almost as good looking as some of the contestants…well, that may be overstating it a little, but you know what I mean. The music was wonderful, the emcees were true pros, and the energy maintained throughout the entire production. Pitch perfect! It’s a shame that this pageant isn’t on television…fingers crossed for the future!
I admit it. I’m a fan. Moving on.
The break came and the lobby flooded with everyone flipping open their phone to text family and friends about their favorite candidates performance thus far. Flashes of digital cameras, loud talk and strong embraces filled the air as all nervously contimplated the second half of the preliminary pageant. I personally had a great time meeting some new folks that are the movers and shakers in the International Pageant system.
The second half of the pageant started with a rendition of “Ain’t No Sunshine When You’re Gone” by Ryan Greenawalt. This, of course, was the precursor for the Evening Gown competition. One of the best parts of the evening gown competition at the International pageant is that the ladies are escorted by their husbands…who frequently show their nerves much more than the steely resolve of their pageant-ready spouses. The proud smiles on their faces are also great fun to watch! (And, yes, the stories you heard are true! While most of the men were in tuxedos, some of the men were dressed in their military service uniforms and even one in a kilt!)
That is to say nothing of the real show–the ladies in their gowns. These ladies show off some of the most beautiful gowns in all pageantry with elegance and style to an excited audience of fans. It truly is a “Super Bowl” event for beauty pageants. Absolutely gorgeous gowns are followed by stunning gowns, followed by even more awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping gowns…and the beautiful ladies that model them for us on the stage under the lights! The needle on my scientifically calibrated Sparkle-o-meter spiked at least 17 times during the competition and I almost lost all readings at one point. (Luckily, I could fix it on the fly with my diagnostic kit from Radio Shack. It’s real. Seriously.)
Ryan Greenawalt came out one last time to sing a song to close out the evening’s festivities. The ladies retook the stage during the high energy serenade. The preliminary awards were next, of which there is only one such award tonight…afterall, most are saved for tomorrow.
The Photogenic Award was given to Mrs. Middle East International 2009, Armaiti Shahidi-Fitzgerald.

I don’t think anyone is shocked to see this as the Website of the Week right now. It’s no secret that I am in Chicago for the International Pageants (possibly even setting up a live program!) and that it’s one of my favorite events of the year. Mrs. International boasts a wonderful website as well.
It’s well organized, has all the important information about the event and sports beautiful photos of the national queens by Clay Spann.
