Miss America 2010 was probably the best telecast since moving to Las Vegas last night.

Already, some pieces of the show have shown up on YouTube, which we conveniently bring to you here.

Of course, the important part of any Miss America telecast is the crowning moment, and they did a fine job with it last night.

Miss America 2010, the 89th Miss America pageant, was held at the Theater for the Performing Arts in Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on January 30, 2010. Miss America 2009, Katie Stam from Indiana, crowned her successor at the end of the event, Caressa Cameron from Virginia. Contestants from all 50 states along with District of Columbia, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico competed for the prestigious title. The pageant was broadcast live on TLC. This edition was the 5th year that Las Vegas hosted the pageant. The semifinalists competed in swimsuit, evening gown, talent, and the final interview. The 4 runner-ups were announced first, followed by the new Miss America winner.

FINAL RESULTS

Miss America 2010 – Virginia – Caressa Cameron

1st runner-up – California – Kristy Cavinder

2nd runner-up -Tennessee – Stefanie Wittler

3rd runner-up – Louisiana – Katherine Putnam

4th runner-up – Kentucky – Mallory Ervin

Miss America 2009 Katie Stam presents Joselo Sostre, Executive Director of

the Miss Puerto Rico Scholarship Program with the new Miss Puerto Rico sash.

Art McMaster, President and CEO of the Miss America Organization, and Miss America 2009 Katie Stam were welcomed to Puerto Rico today by Joselo Sostre, Executive State Director of the Miss Puerto Rico Scholarship Program, along with his newly appointed staff at a press conference in San Juan.  They were greeted by media outlets that included magazines, newspapers and television outlets who covered The Miss America Press Conference.

Art surprised the media with his bilingual welcome, and was pleased to announce the January 30, 2010 Pageant date on TLC live from Planet Hollywood.  The press conference was also highlighted by having the very first Miss Puerto Rico participate, Miss Puerto Rico 1948, Irma Nydia Velazquez- marking her 60th anniversary!

Irma was so proud to welcome back the Miss America Program to Puerto Rico and spoke on how important it is for young women in Puerto Rico to have a pageant like Miss America, with core values that focuses on education. She is so very proud of the title she earned nearly 60 years ago and was thrilled to be a part of this historic event for the Organization.

Prior to the press conference, Miss America 2009 Katie Stam and Art were invited to meet with Puerto Rico’s Secretary of State, who presented them with a Proclamation.  Immediately following the press conference, the members of the Miss America Organization and Joselo’s team were invited to tour the Governor’s mansion.  This guided tour included meeting with the First lady of Puerto Rico, Luce Vela who was thrilled to have Miss America visit one of the world’s most historic sites, Fortaleza!

Following the tour, Miss America was able to have three photo shoots, and wrapped up her day with additional TV and radio interviews before leaving Puerto Rico on Wednesday.

Katie will return to Puerto Rico for the July 31 Miss Puerto Rico Pageant and crown the 2009 winner who will compete for Miss America in January 2010!

As a part of her passion for community service, Miss America 2009 Katie Stam is helping to grant wishes for military families through a special program called, HEROES AT HOME. Heroes at Home is a joint effort between Sears Holdings and Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading non-profit working to preserve affordable home ownership by providing free home rehabilitation. The mission of Heroes at Home is to ensure that military families are living in safe, warm and comfortable homes – a dream come true for many veterans, and especially important during this troubled economy and housing crisis.

In celebration of Memorial Day this weekend, Katie will be promoting Heroes at Home during a special satellite media tour today, May 20. She will be speaking to media outlets across the country about Sears’ and Heroes at Home’s mission,  and reinforcing her commitment to promoting community service and involvement.

On Saturday, May 23, Miss America 2009 Katie Stam will kickoff Indy 500 weekend at the annual Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade, where she will be singing “God Bless America,” while riding on the Firestone float.

The following day Katie will sing “America the Beautiful” during pre-race ceremonies for the Indianapolis 500 Race. The singing of “America the Beautiful” will take place only minutes before the start of the Indianapolis 500, continuing the countdown to traditional pre-race favorites such as driver introductions, the national anthem, the military fly over, the playing of “Taps,” singing of “(Back Home Again In) Indiana,” the release of balloons and the command to “Start Your Engines.”

Katie is so excited to be in her home state and participating in this exciting tradition!

For the first time in 30 years, Miss America has traveled to Germany to serve as the Ambassador for America.  Miss America 2009 Katie Stam had the honor to meet with our U.S. soldiers fighting abroad and thank them personally for their unwavering commitment and the personal sacrifices they have made for our country.

Last Friday, Katie was in Stuttgart, Germany to talk with high school and elementary school students, bringing her message on the importance of community service and involvement.

“They’re really amazing people,” Katie said of service members. “They’ve dedicated their lives to upholding the integrity of our nation, fighting for our freedom and putting their lives on the line.”

During a visit to Patch Elementary School, the students welcomed Katie with a loud greeting: “We love you, Miss America.”

Katie told the young students about her childhood dream of one day becoming Miss America. “With self-confidence and believing in yourself, dreams can be achieved,” she said.

On Sunday, Katie visited recovering soldiers at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s intensive care unit, leaving photos of herself as a gift for the patients who were not awake.

“It means the world to me,” she said about spending time with the troops.

Katie also visited the Fisher House and other troops in the hospital, where they expressed their overwhelming appreciation of her visit.

“It’s people like that that make you realize why you do it. I could see why she was picked (to be Miss America),” said Army Spc. Victor Hudleston, 24, of Pebble Beach, Calif.

Katie was also on hand for the official dedication of the Illesheim Sports-field during the Spring Championship of American and Bavarian Rugby Teams. She was greeted with much enthusiasm and applause as she assisted in dedicating the field to the late John Sanchez, who managed Illesheim’s rugby team and was actively involved in organizing events for soldiers and their families.

Katie had a memorable time in Germany and she hopes to go back again to show our appreciation of the military!

Miss America 2009 Katie Stam had a memorable time in Washington, D.C. On Tuesday she had the special privilege of accompanying 53 very special Children’s Miracle Network ambassadors to the White House to meet the President!

Wednesday, she paid a visit to Walter Reed Medical Center to commend our Iraq War wounded warriors who bravely fought for our country. That night she attended the USO dinner where she sang the National Anthem and had the opportunity to meet more of our country’s soldiers, celebrities including Renee Zellweger and political figures such as Al Franken.

On Thursday,  Katie had the opportunity to visit Bethesda Naval Medical Center to again thank our troops for their commitment and service to our country. Visiting these hospitals have been some of the most heartwarming experiences for Katie and she is so happy she gets to thank the troops in person for their heroic efforts.

Linwood, NJ  - Discovery Communications-owned TLC and the Miss America Organization announced today that the Saturday night, Jan. 24 live telecast of the 2009 Miss America pageant drew 3.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

The show was the most-watched show on cable for the night among adults 18 to 49,  women 18 to 49,  adults 18 to 34 and women 18 to 34. 


Sam Haskell, III, Chairman of the Board for the Miss America Organization stated, “After partnering with TLC for the last two years, we have been able to build our Miss America audience and reach new and younger demographics.  We are thrilled with the results, and we have been able to successfully re-brand our Miss America image while continuing to expand the reach of our program.”

TLC and the 2009 Miss America Pageant ranked third among all television networks in adults 18 to 49, behind only Fox and CBS, according to the network.

Art McMaster, President and CEO of The Miss America Organization stated, “We are truly excited with the new direction of our Pageant telecast and to know that viewers across America are tuning in to witness the tradition of our Pageant and that iis being presented in a new and contemporary way.”

 

This year, Miss America 2009 Katie Stam will serve as the Goodwill Ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network and will work on her personal platform of “Promoting Community Service and Involvement,” across the country.
