The Miss America Organization Announces Mario Lopez to Return as the 2010 Miss America Pageant Host on TLC
Nov 5th

Mario Lopez
The Miss America Organization and TLC announced today that Mario Lopez will return as host of the 2010 Miss America Pageant when it is broadcast live from Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 30 at 8 PM ET. This marks his second consecutive year hosting the event, and his third time total for Miss America.
“I look forward to taking the stage again in January and helping crown the next Miss America,” said Lopez. “It’s great to be associated with such a respected and relevant organization, and TLC has turned the pageant into a must-watch event.”
From actor to host, producer to writer; Mario has already made his mark on Hollywood and he has no plans to stop. EXTRA has named him the single host of the daily nationally syndicated show. He will also continue his hosting duties on MTV’s highest rated program, America’s Best Dance Crew. This year, Mario released a children’s book entitled Mud Tacos, a vibrant story he co-wrote with his sister. Additionally, fans saw Mario revive his role as Dr. Mark Hamoui on the popular FX series Nip/Tuck.
“We’re thrilled Mario is returning to host the upcoming pageant. He is the consummate professional, and has unmatched charm and energy,” added Art McMaster, President and CEO of the Miss America Organization.
“Mario has proven himself as one of the most skilled hosts for live events, and helped make this year’s pageant the success it was. We welcome him back and know it will help make the 2010 pageant even better,” explains Brent Zacky, VP of Development for TLC.

Miss America Pageant 2009: update 1/24/09 at 9:00 p.m.
Jan 24th
We’re in the final lap now. Any guesses?
Children’s Miracle Network had an ad in the last ad break and they do great work and it is important to keep in mind the new Miss America will be their goodwill ambassador the next year.
Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, was introduced to a recording of Bert Park’s rendition of “There She Is.” It was the typical speech voice over with waving and slide show we’ve come to expect with pageant goodbyes.
The envelope from Ernst and Young came on stage, but it’s delivery meant some departures. The final five are:
4th Runner Up ($10,000): Miss Florida
3rd Runner Up ($15,000): Miss New York
2nd Runner Up ($20,000): Miss Iowa
1st Runner Up ($25,000): Miss Georgia
Our new Miss America is Miss Indiana, Katie Stam. She receives a $5o,000 scholarship. She took the runway to Bert Park’s rendition of “There She Is.” I mention that because many believed we wouldn’t be hearing that theme anymore. Thank goodness it was saved. It is worth remembering Katie was one of the America’s Choice selections.
As she was swarmed onstage, Mario attempted to get a quick interview, but Katie was understandably emotional.
Congratulations to all the wonderful participants.

We had more reasons to purchase Secret with that ad break…now back to the pageant!

Mario Lopez came back to mention we are now at Top 10 and will eliminate three additional contestants. The questions will be asked by average Joe’s on the Jumbotron. They were:
- Miss New York discussed Sarah Palin’s MAO past
- Miss California discussed Prince Harry and celebrity’s responsibility for their words
- Miss Georgia discussed government company bailouts
- Miss Tennessee was given the expected Obama question
- Miss Indiana was given a question about performance enhancing drugs for professional athletes
- Miss Iowa responded if college should be free
- Miss Florida responded about prejudice toward women
This means that Miss District of Columbia, Hawaii and Miss Michigan had to take the dreaded trek to the “Elimination Lounge.”
Only 15 minutes left. Who will win?
Miss America Pageant 2009: update 1/24/09 at 7:12 p.m.
Jan 24th

Our updates will be coming out with every commercial break and will probably be in a true stream of consciousness approach.
TLC’s production of the Miss America pageant last year, I thought, was better than we’ve had in many years. Certainly superior to the TCM efforts and reaching back past the last few years of ABC’s coverage.
Expectations are high, as well, with the return of Mario Lopez, undoubtably the most popular pageant host out there…possibly since Mr. Bert Parks himself. (Though the Tony Danza and Donny and Marie buzz is still out there.) We all can be sure it won’t be a repeat of James Denton…that much is sure.
TLC used “What Not to Wear” as a lead in and I hoped this wouldn’t be a foreshadowing event for the gown competition. That would be a disaster, but I’m happy to say that wasn’t the case.
The show began with a special opening with Kirsten Haglund in front of the Planet Hollywood Casino and Resort and they had an opening number featuring choreography involving chairs, canes, hats, ribbons and a tip tapping Mario Lopez across the stage. It was very contemporary if not exactly high energy.
The ladies introduced themselves with some of the longer introduction speeches I’ve heard in a while at Miss America. They have kept the black sash with white lettering for this year’s pageant. Mario noted 13,000 contestants this year participated in Miss America pageants…I hope they all tune in to the PageantCast soon!!!
As the ladies introduced themselves, we started making our wagers at the house. The longer intros gave you time to discuss some of the ladies as they introduced themselves…that was great for the gambling element at our location!
Clinton Kelly was introduced next from “What Not to Wear” and he will be the roaming reporter for this year’s pageant.
Time for commercials. I wish we could fast forward, but instead I’ll just press that little post button! See you in a few!
