Miss and Teen International 2010 Finals

We’re back and we’re happy you are back, too!
The final night of competition is here before us in Chicago, IL and we know you are all looking forward to what is in store. Let’s quickly review what has been awarded so far.
On Thursday, the Teens awarded Congeniality to Megan Willey, Miss North Carolina International 2010. Photogenic was awarded to Miss Arkansas International 2010, Mollie Parker.
On Friday, they awarded Kristin Koether, Texas, the Director of the Year award. Congeniality was awarded to Ali Glaser, Miss Missouri International 2010, and Photogenic was awarded to Miss Oklahoma International 2010, Anne Marie Costello.
In fact, we were lucky enough to get interviews with Megan, Ali and Anne Marie for our podcasts coming out next week. You won’t want to miss those outstanding glimpses at the ladies as they prepare for their finals competition.
As we wait tonight for everyone to file into their seats, an odd quiet rumble fills the air. Nerves, tension, and even a little fear fill the air. The jubilant excess of the preliminary nights has been replaced with anticipation and nervous excitement. I’m ho9led up in my position in the back of the theater and I am ready for this evening to ROCK!
As with yesterday’s report, we won’t be focusing on the production elements as we typically do with preliminary nights and try to keep this to the results and major events (like any falls, trips, or explosive bunnies).
After opening number and introductions, we moved very quickly into the announcement of finalists and online voting.
The Online Voting for Teen was Florida; Miss was Kansas.
Then it was on to finalists. All orders here are in the order announced at the venue. They are random, but they are the order the ladies will compete in for the balance of the evening.

There were, as always, a number of people that made for the door right after the announcement of Top Ten. That’s really a shame, folks. C’mon, folks. Behave like adults. I heard quite a bit of noise in the corridor outside while Jessica Byington, Miss Teen International 2009 was interviewed by Joanne onstage. By the time Erin Golden, Miss International 2009, was onstage, it seemed to settle down. Erin introduced her fiancé from the stage and told everyone to expect her to compete again as a Mrs. International contestant.
On stage question started with Teens. Each was asked a warm up, chatter question, asked about their platform, and a platform related follow up question. This system is very strict with the 30 second time limit…each second over costs a point per second. From what I saw, the ladies kept to the limits. After a tune by Ryan Greenawalt (http://www.ryangreenawalt.com/ ), the Miss contestants took their turn with the on stage question competition.
They followed with the Fun Fashion competition; first for Teens and next for the Miss division. I do admit I’m surprised at some of the outfits that appear to show more than the Fitness competition but apparently that is the new direction. Those of you intending to compete next year, take note. You will want to check Paula Preston’s photos and the DVD’s to see what they were wearing. (Paula’s website is http://www.paulapreston.com/ ) Those (myself, included) that thought an all woman judging panel would result in a more conservative finalist panel were mistaken.
Intermission was followed by the Teen Fitness competition, followed by the Miss division. Kyle Gordon followed that up with a wonderful rendition of “Firefly.” This was followed by the Evening Gown competition. Again, Teens were followed by the Miss division.
It was time for a few production numbers while scores were tabulated…including a tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Jessica Byington, Miss Teen International 2009, and Erin Golden, Miss International 2009, took their final walks. They walked during a prerecorded speech by the titleholder was played. They kept the goodbyes to a decent length of time as opposed to some of the locals and state pageants I’ve witnessed where these final words can literally go on for ten to fifteen minutes. I didn’t time them, but I think they kept them under three minutes. Again, directors please take note.
It was time for final results. The auditorium went dead silent with a funny hum of activity under it all. We all awaited the final results with anticipation and drama.

Miss International 2010 Preliminaries

Hello from a wet and wild Chicago, IL. A storm system blew through the area just as many of the ladies were coming over to the theater tonight, so there were some delays to the beginning of the competition. The Miss contestants largely missed the storms, but the Teen contestants that were in the audience tonight were stranded in the lobby for a couple of minutes as they waited for a break in the storm.
I watched the whole thing with amusement as always. Nothing major and we all prepared for a great evening. Scott Seidl came on stage and did his usual opening messages and announcements. Scott announced the Director of the Year, Kristina Koether, director of Texas International Pageants. Congratulations to her…she’s a lovely lady and has worked hard for this honor.
Well, we had the opening number I’ve been raving about with the Miss contestants in the animal prints and it was again high energy and highly entertaining. The ladies introduced themselves and our MC’s took the stage. The actual program of the show was very similar to last night’s so I will highlight mainly differences and the phases of competition here in the writeup.
Erin Golden, Miss International 2009, came out in the gown she won her competition in last year and she looked stunning as always. She highlighted her trip to New York hosting an event at Macy’s Herold Square and the program moved along after a brief interview.
By the way, did I mention how gorgeous our judges are this year? They are gorgeous! Okay. Moving on.
Fun Fashion Wear was the first competition of the night. Word on the street is that they now consider this “Dancing With The Stars” type of costumes. (Previously I had always heard it was to replicate what ladies would wear to a Red Carpet affair or the like.) While I saw that very clearly with the Teens, it seemed a little less so during the Miss competition. Thgat’s just my opinion, though.
Ryan Greenawalt performed a song between competitions and then we moved on to the Fitness competition. The ladies strutted their stuff across the stage…what a lovely group of young women.
Then there was intermission. Many photos were taken by others. I kept looking out the window for storm clouds. The storm had passed and I did my happy dance.
Got a look. Not the good kind. Moving on.
Next, we moved into the Evening Gown competition. More gem tones this competition and a fair amount of our friend, white, in the Miss division gowns. All these ladies were stunning in their gowns and showed them off with a flair and elegance.
Ryan Greenawalt came out to sing “Unstoppable” to introduce the contestants back onto the stage. We did have a near miss with Ashley Newman, Miss Illinois International, almost falling over. Luckily, she caught herself and is fine.
Photogenic award was given out first. It went to Miss Oklahoma International, Anna-Marie Costello.
Congeniality came up next and it was awarded to Allie Glaser, Miss Missouri International.
Congratulations to these lovely ladies. One day left of voting on the Online Voting award. You are all invited to come out here in Chicago for the Miss and Teen International Pageants. Hope to see you all here! I know I’ll be here!

On a warm summer evening in Rancho Mirage a loud cheer resonated from The Westin Mission Hills Resort and Spa as the crowd watched Mrs. Georgia become the new Ms. U.S. Globe, the most beautiful Misses in the nation. It is the fourth time the crown has gone home to the state of Georgia. Areas of competition included evening gown, fitness and interview. Mrs. Georgia was also nominated and won the Contestant’s Choice Award.
Kelly Pittman, Ms. U.S. Globe 2010
Kelly Pittman was crowned Ms. U.S. Globe 2010. The 5’5”, hazel eyed beauty and mother of 3 is a graduate from Kentucky University with a degree in Speech Communication. Kelly is passionate about sharing the message of hope and healing and plans on using her title to continue spreading the message of W.I.N. throughout the United States.
Ms. U.S. Globe serves as the primary fundraiser for the W.I.N. Foundation, a counseling outreach for women and children faced with abuse. As the new Ms. U.S. Globe, Kelly is now the national spokesperson for the outreach. “I have gone through Right Living Program numerous times and commit myself daily to the pursuit of living a life according to its healing principles.” Pittman will also go on to represent the United States of America at the 2011 Mrs. Globe international contest. The Mrs. Globe pageant is the only authentic pageant that offers married women the opportunity to compete at an international pageant every year.

Mrs. International Pageant Preliminary Night 2010

One of my favorite times of year is once again upon us. The Mrs. International pageant has returned to fabulous Chicago, IL for preliminary competition. I have my sparkle-o-meter, a makeshift Amazing-A-Tron, and my incredible gift for stating the obvious and we are preparing for the pageant.
As usual, I write these notes during the pageant and post them shortly after the pageant. I will attempt, as always, to post a wrapup LIVE from the Doubletree hotel next door after the event. Those are generally quite chaotic, so if you miss it, check out the archived copy at http://tv.pageantcast.com/
Also, our plan is to have a program this coming Tuesday AND FRIDAY. Tuesday’s show, of course, is very special as it will be the 250th episode of the PageantCast. Friday’s show should carry over any information or interviews not covered in the show on Tuesday. I will try to balance the shows as always so you won’t want to miss either program. We plan to not have Amazing-A-Tron segments during the LIVE! Pageant Review Tuesday and Friday.
Matt Davenport Productions once again put together the stage production and this year they sported a brand new set complete with two Jumbo-Tron screens and a fresh opening number done to Black Eyed Peas’ super hit “Tonights Going to be a Good Night” sung by Ryan Greenawalt (http://www.ryangreenawalt.com/). The ladies came in beautiful fuchsia outfits that seemed to have the effect of setting the audience completely on fire.
The ladies introduced themselves from ports of call all over the country and across the seas including Austrailia and India. All the ladies looked stunning and ready for an exciting competition!
After introductions and that knockout of an opening number, they introduced our MC’s for the evening Kyle Henry and Mrs. International 2008 Laine Berry. Laine, as expected, was decked out in RED from top to bottom; if you recall, Go Red for Women was her platform and the official platform of the International Pageant system (http://www.mrsinternational.com/).
Mrs. International 2009 Armaiti Shahidi-Fitzgerald was welcomed to the stage to say some brief words while the ladies backstage prepared for the next phase of competition. The MC’s introduced the judges, which I couldn’t catch everyone’s name, so I won’t list here. You can get that from the program books anyway. Go buy one. Sheesh.
Fitness Wear was the first phase of competition on stage. (The ladies had already done their interview the previous day with round-robin style 5 minute interviews.) Well, these ladies had obviously worked hard to get in the physical shape they were for this competition on stage. Most of the ladies came out in two-piece fitness wear outfits. The competition went quickly and professionally as we’ve come to expect at the International pageants. One snafu with announcing the wrong contestant was the only exception to that rule and it appears to me that the contestants must have gotten out of order backstage somewhere.
During breaks Kyle and Laine had some banter to work through and I have one thing to say: I think Laine Berry may speak faster than that guy that did the Federal Express commercials back in the 1980′s. I have never heard someone that could go through an entire page of script in approximately 20 seconds before. I’m just a Midwestern boy and we’re not used to such fast speaking.
The new set was deceptively simple in concept but by changing the lighting from time to time, it really could take on any character. For pageant directors that give lighting little to no attention, remember you can save a lot of money on a set by creating a simple set and just working with the lighting to give it best affect.
Once we completed Fitness Wear (which takes a while with this many contestants), I felt I didn’t have a good feel for who should be finalists yet. Despite my pleading that they go through the whole shebang again from beginning to end, the show must go on. (I guess I’ll need to get the DVD. Really now. Just one more time.
Okay.
Moving on.
From Fitness Wear, we moved into Intermission or as I like to call it “Husband Wrangling Competition.” Eddie Peterson was equal to the task.
So during intermission, had a couple wonderful conversations. The concensus was that we have a highly talented and exciting group of women competing this year and that the production is simply glorious. The second act started with a wonderful tune sung by Ryan Greenawalt and a quick move into the Evening Gown competition.
The ladies, as always, were escorted by their husbands which always, for me, adds to the drama of the event. I typically check out the ladies gown and enjoy watching the husband as they nearly pass out from fear of somehow screwing it up for their wives. Yet another reason I am a bachelor. I would fall into the first row or something. These guys were all so smooth…I thought at least a few of them looked a little like James Bond.
And the Bond girls were up to the glamour of the evening. The sparkle-o-meter was flashing like a 60′s hippy on a progressive campus. We saw an unusual amount of black gowns this year, with the BLING moving to the jewelry and accessories. There were some of the glitzy jewelfests (the Jessica Rabbit look if you will) we’ve become accustomed to at the Mrs. International competition, but less than previous years. White is still very popular in competition, but I did see a few striking strong color gowns, particularly some gorgeous red gowns this year.
So I’ve heard the new arch in the set called the “Stargate” but as I watch this competition, I call it the compass as we lead ourselves on a magical journey around the world. Can we agree on calling it the International compass???
I just realized this article is more random than some in the past. I do not apologize. Continuing with the random, this year I saw a lot less uniformed gentlemen escorting their wives. I know at least in one case that is due to the husband having been recently deployed. To them, I thank them all for their service to our country.
By the way, all the production music was new that I heard this year. The production music last year had been used a few years, so I was happy to hear the change. After 50 contestants, any piece of looping music becomes trying.
After 2 phases of competition with 3 groups of contestants, the preliminary competitions were now complete. They welcomed Ryan Greenawalt to sing “Better Days” to the stage. By the way, all this was accomplished by 2 hours into the pageant. Plenty of smaller pageants can’t churn with that much content in that kind of time frame. Congratulations to the International Pageant team.
Midway through the song Ryan reintroduced the ladies and they took the stage. This led us into the preliminary awards ceremony. That means, of course, the naming of the Photogenic Winner. It is decided by the judges based on the candid photos taken during the week. Mrs. Southeast International, Shannon Devine, won the award in her stunning white gown.
